Moon at Hitotsuya by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1880

Yoshitoshi captures a chilling night scene where a haggard old woman, clutching a burning torch, peers intensely through a bamboo wall. The full moon hangs high above, casting a pale glow on the swaying pampas grass, while the woman's wild hair and intense gaze suggest she's a character from a dark ghost story or a stealthy thief. As the last great master of ukiyo-e, Yoshitoshi was known for pushing the boundaries of traditional Japanese prints, often blending historical tales with a darker, psychological edge that feels surprisingly modern.
