Sangoku Tarō Kneeling before Demon and Warrior by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1866

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi brings the supernatural to life in this intense 1866 scene, likely depicting a moment from the famous Water Margin tales. A calmly kneeling figure in a gorgeous floral kimono seems almost unfazed by the giant, hairy warrior looming over him with a sword and lantern. Behind them, a blue demon with snakes for hair adds to the chaos, creating a perfect storm of elegance and terror. Yoshitoshi was a young prodigy at the time, already making a name for himself with bold compositions that blended history, folklore, and a touch of horror.
