Streetwalker by moonlight by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1885-1892

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e, created this hauntingly beautiful print as part of his famous series '100 Aspects of the Moon.' The scene captures a solitary woman, likely a courtesan or streetwalker given the title, braving the night air in a heavy black kimono and a teal hood. She clutches a rolled mat or blanket, perhaps heading to or from a rendezvous under the watchful eye of a partially clouded moon. Yoshitoshi was known for blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with a touch of Western-influenced realism and psychological depth, making his figures feel incredibly alive and melancholic.
