Il Vecchio Guerriero Tomobayashi Rokurō Mitsuhira
1888
This striking woodblock print by the legendary Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts an aging samurai, Tomobayashi Rokurō Mitsuhira, trudging through a landscape dotted with blooming chrysanthemums. Clad in traditional dark armor and carrying a long spear, the weary warrior's bare feet and intense, sideways gaze tell a story of a long, hard journey. Created in 1888 as part of his 'Biographies of Modern People' series, this piece captures the fading era of the samurai with Yoshitoshi's signature dramatic flair and emotional depth, reminding us of the last great master of ukiyo-e.
