Moon at Waisui by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1880

Under a pale, watchful moon, a rugged fisherman in tattered green robes sits casually with his fishing rod, glancing back at an armored warrior hiding nervously in the sharp, spiky reeds. This dramatic scene comes from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s masterpiece series '100 Views of the Moon' and depicts the legend of Wu Zixu, a fleeing Chinese general. The print captures the tense moment of their encounter at the river, where the fisherman agrees to help the general escape—a story of loyalty that, in some versions, ends with the fisherman drowning himself to prove he would never betray the secret for a reward.
