Evening Snow at Mount Hira
1857
Hiroshige was the absolute master of capturing atmospheric moods, and this snowy scene is a chillingly beautiful example from his 'Eight Views of Omi' series, created just a few years before his death. The print depicts Mount Hira blanketed in white, looming over the deep, icy blue of Lake Biwa where tiny figures brave the cold in their boats. Notice how the artist uses the white of the paper itself to represent the heavy snowfall—a clever trick of the woodblock medium that makes the winter landscape feel incredibly crisp and bright against the dark, calligraphy-filled sky.
