Kameyama by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1855

Hiroshige captures the grueling reality of travel along the Tōkaidō road here, showing a team of nearly naked porters hauling massive yellow cargo boxes through a forest of towering pines. This print, titled Kameyama, is part of his famous Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō series, which was basically the 19th-century equivalent of a viral travel blog. The soft pink hues of the sky contrast beautifully with the heavy labor of the men, reminding us that the 'floating world' of ukiyo-e wasn't just about glamorous geishas, but also the sweaty, everyday hustle of common people.
