Kanagawa by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1855

Hiroshige invites us to the seaside inn of Kanagawa, a famous rest stop along the Tōkaidō highway where travelers could pause and enjoy the view. On the right, figures relax on a thatched balcony adorned with red lanterns, overlooking a calm bay filled with sailing ships under a stark white moon. This vertical composition belongs to his later 'Famous Views' series, distinct from his earlier horizontal Tōkaidō prints, and features his trademark gradient sky fading from deep indigo to pale cream. It's a perfect snapshot of Edo-period travel, where stopping for tea and scenery was half the adventure.
