Sakanoshita

Utagawa Hiroshige

1855

Sakanoshita by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1855

Hiroshige takes us on a dizzying hike up the Tokaido road, where travelers cling to a narrow path sandwiched between towering, golden-yellow cliffs. A massive waterfall roars in the background, contrasting with the quiet shrine of Kannon tucked into a cave on the right where pilgrims are resting. It’s a brilliant mix of natural grandeur and the very human struggle of a long journey, typical of his late masterpieces.
