The Autumn Moon at Ishiyama on Lake Biwa (Ishiyama no Shūgetsu)
1835
Hiroshige captures a serene night scene where a perfect full moon hangs high over the rugged cliffs of Ishiyama-dera temple. Legend has it that Murasaki Shikibu, the author of The Tale of Genji, sat right here on this moonlit night to find inspiration for her masterpiece. The composition leads the eye from the dark, textured rocks and pine trees down to the calm, blue waters of Lake Biwa and the distant Seta Bridge. This print is part of his famous 'Eight Views of Ōmi' series, showcasing his incredible talent for blending poetic atmosphere with traditional landscapes.
