Tokaido gojusantsugi, Pl.24 by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1868-1912

This print from the famous Tokaido series depicts the chaotic crossing of the Oi River at Shimada station, a major hurdle on the ancient highway. Because the shogunate forbade bridges here to stop invading armies, travelers had to rely on teams of sturdy porters to wade through the water carrying their palanquins and luggage. In the distance, a serene Mount Fuji rises against a pink dawn sky, contrasting with the bustling human effort in the foreground. It’s a classic example of ukiyo-e art, capturing the lively atmosphere of travel in old Japan.
