Tokaido gojusantsugi, Pl.30
1868-1912
Travelers trudge along the famous Tōkaidō road toward the golden-roofed town of Hamamatsu, silhouetted against a breathtaking gradient sky of dusk. In the background, the formidable Hamamatsu Castle watches over the scene while a flock of birds flies home, echoing the journey of the procession below. Although the artist Utagawa Hiroshige passed away in 1858, his 'Fifty-Three Stations' series was so incredibly popular that publishers kept reprinting it for decades—making this likely a later Meiji-era copy of a masterpiece that served as the 19th-century equivalent of a viral travel guide.
