Cipreses by Vincent van Gogh, 1889

Vincent van Gogh painted this towering, flame-like cypress tree while staying at an asylum in Saint-Rémy in 1889. He was absolutely fascinated by these dark green trees, once writing to his brother Theo that they were 'as beautiful in line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk.' The swirling sky, complete with a delicate crescent moon, and the thick, energetic brushstrokes make the entire landscape feel alive and almost turbulent. It's a perfect example of his Post-Impressionist genius, turning a simple tree into a swirling, emotional force of nature that still captivates viewers today.
