Painted in 1887 during his Paris years, this view of the Seine at Asnières shows Van Gogh completely transforming his style. He ditched his dark, earthy Dutch palette for the bright, cool blues and greens of the Impressionists. The short, dashed brushstrokes create a vibrating energy in the sky and water, proving he was busy experimenting with new ways to capture light before his famous move to the south of France.
