Madame Roulin che culla la culla (La berceuse)
1889
Van Gogh created this portrait of Augustine Roulin as a visual lullaby, hoping it would comfort lonely sailors in their cabins. He painted her holding a rope, presumably attached to a cradle, set against a wildly patterned floral background that looks almost like a tapestry. Her yellow-tinted face and intense stare give her a timeless, almost iconic quality, typical of his bold Post-Impressionist style. He actually painted five versions of this 'Berceuse,' trying to get the colors just right to evoke a sense of peace.
