Rolo de Boya tocando qin (rolo completo) sobre seda, 31x92cm
Wang Zhenpeng’s Yuan dynasty scroll captures the legendary friendship between musician Bo Ya and his soulmate listener, Zhong Ziqi. On the far right, Bo Ya sits playing his qin (zither) with intense focus, while Ziqi listens with eyes closed, completely absorbed in the music—a moment so profound that when Ziqi later died, Bo Ya smashed his instrument, declaring no one else could understand his music. The vast majority of the scroll is filled with elegant calligraphy, likely poems or inscriptions by later admirers, turning the piece into a collaborative tribute across time. Wang Zhenpeng was famous for his delicate 'white line' style, using fine ink strokes to create a sense of ethereal grace without heavy shading.
