Design for the cover of the almanac 'The Blue Rider' II', 'zh-CN by Wassily Kandinsky, 1911

Kandinsky dreamed up this wild, frame-within-a-frame scene for the second volume of the famous 'Blue Rider' almanac, a manifesto for German Expressionism that never actually saw the light of day because World War I broke out. You can see his signature move here: bold, wobbly black outlines trapping splashes of vibrant blue, pink, and earthy brown to create a mysterious, almost medieval-looking figure that feels like a stained-glass window gone abstract. It is a perfect snapshot of the moment art stopped trying to copy reality and started trying to capture pure emotion.
