Sounds Plate 13

Wassily Kandinsky

1913

Sounds Plate 13 by Wassily Kandinsky, 1913

Imagine hearing a color—that's exactly what Kandinsky was doing when he created this piece for his 1913 book 'Klänge' (Sounds). As a master of synesthesia, he translated musical concepts into visual art, using thick, dramatic black lines and punchy blocks of blue, orange, and purple to create a rhythm you can almost hear. The figures here look like they're caught in a dreamlike, jagged landscape, hovering right on the edge between reality and total abstraction. It’s a brilliant example of German Expressionism, where raw emotion matters more than perfect realism.
