Sounds Plate 14
1913
Kandinsky created this bold print for his 1913 book 'Klänge' (meaning 'Sounds'), a unique project where he mixed poetry with visual art. The jagged black shapes and stark white spaces look like a rocky landscape or a strange creature, but he wanted viewers to actually 'hear' the image. As a pioneer of abstract art, he believed shapes had musical notes. This woodcut technique, where the artist carves into a block of wood, gave the image a loud, rhythmic punch that perfectly matches the book's musical theme.
