Sint Joris II
1911
In this explosive 1911 composition, Kandinsky takes the classic legend of St. George slaying the dragon and shatters it into a kaleidoscope of vibrant shapes and sharp angles. You can just barely make out the armored saint on the left and the beast on the right, but the real star here is the chaotic, colorful energy that pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling. Created right around the time he was fully diving into abstraction, this piece feels like a visual jazz solo where color and form dance completely off the page.
