Scroll of Tasting Tea, paper, 142.31×40.89, National Palace Museum, Taipei
Wen Zhengming, one of the Ming Dynasty's most celebrated artists, invites us into a serene mountain retreat where the only agenda is a good cup of tea. Surrounded by towering, gnarled pines and misty blue peaks, figures gather in a rustic thatched pavilion while a servant crosses a stone bridge carrying a teapot. The elegant calligraphy filling the upper sky is actually a poem about escaping the dusty world to enjoy tea, dated to 1531. This hanging scroll perfectly captures the scholar's ideal life: far from the city noise, sipping tea, and contemplating nature in what is now a treasured piece at the Taipei Palace Museum.
