Illustrations of the book of Job Pl.07
1826
William Blake turns the biblical story of Job into a terrifying visual drama in this intense engraving. In the center, a muscular Satan figure stands on the suffering Job, pouring down a jar of 'sore boils' while a weeping figure tends to his feet. The scene is framed by text quoting Job's famous resignation, 'The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away.' Blake, an eccentric visionary who claimed to talk to angels, created this series near the end of his life, and art historians consider it his absolute masterpiece.
