Illustrations of the book of Job Pl.13 by William Blake, 1826

William Blake created this dramatic engraving late in his life as part of his famous series illustrating the Book of Job. In the scene, the young prophet Elihu stands boldly under a starry sky, gesturing toward the heavens while addressing Job and his three elderly friends, who sit huddled in contemplation. The text surrounding the image reinforces the biblical narrative about divine wisdom, with Elihu declaring, 'I am Young & ye are very Old.' Blake, a visionary poet and artist, actually engraved these plates himself just before his death, pouring his own spiritual beliefs into the striking, muscular figures.
