Pl. 19 – De nacht by William Blake, 1789

William Blake fused poetry and painting in this page from *Songs of Innocence*, a key work of the Romantic movement. He used a unique method called 'illuminated printing' to etch text and images together, hand-coloring each copy. The poem 'Night' flips the scary idea of darkness on its head—wolves and tigers weep instead of attacking, and angels watch over the sheep. Down below, ethereal figures in flowing robes stand in a dreamy, blue-green landscape. Blake claimed he actually saw angels in trees, so for him, this wasn't fantasy, it was a documentary of the spiritual world!
