The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun
c. 1805
William Blake brings the biblical apocalypse to life with terrifying intensity, depicting a monstrous dragon that is part bat, part serpent, and entirely nightmare fuel. This beast looms over a glowing woman who sits with arms wide open, radiating golden energy against the dark, jagged chaos surrounding her. She represents the 'Woman Clothed with the Sun' from the Book of Revelation, looking less like a victim and more like a powerful force of nature holding her ground. Blake painted a whole series of these 'Great Red Dragon' pictures for a patron who wanted to visualize the end of the world, and this version is arguably the most dramatic.
