Visions of the daughters of Albion Pl. 01 by William Blake, 1793

William Blake created this swirling, dreamlike title page for his 1793 poem 'Visions of the Daughters of Albion,' a fierce critique of slavery and the oppression of women. The motto at the bottom, 'The Eye sees more than the Heart knows,' hints at his belief that true vision goes beyond simple emotion. Blake invented his own 'illuminated printing' method to produce these, combining text and image on a single copper plate, making each copy a unique work of art hand-colored by him and his wife.
