Dante and Virgil

Dante and Virgil by William Bouguereau, 1850

Bouguereau throws us straight into the fiery depths of Hell with this dramatic 1850 scene from Dante’s *Inferno*. Two muscular sinners are locked in a vicious, wrestling-style grapple, with one savagely biting the other’s neck while bat-winged demons lurk in the smoky background. Standing safely to the left are the poet Dante (wearing his signature laurel wreath) and his guide Virgil, witnessing the brutality of the damned. This painting was Bouguereau’s breakthrough moment at age 25, proving his mastery of the human form and earning him immediate fame at the Paris Salon.
