The Derby Day
William Powell Frith’s massive panorama captures the chaotic energy of the Epsom Derby, serving as a vibrant Victorian snapshot of British society. You can spot everyone from wealthy aristocrats in fancy carriages to pickpockets, acrobats, and gamblers mingling on the grass. Frith was the master of 'modern life' painting, and this piece was so popular at the Royal Academy that a special railing had to be installed to protect it from the crushing crowds. It’s essentially a visual novel by Charles Dickens, packed with tiny, gossipy stories in every corner.
