聖橋
1937
Yoshida Hiroshi captures the legendary Shinkyo bridge in Nikko with this stunning 1937 woodblock print. Notice how the vibrant vermilion of the arched bridge pops against the cool, misty blues of the surrounding cedar forest and rushing river? This piece is a perfect example of shin-hanga (new prints), a movement that revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western lighting and perspective. Yoshida was a master of capturing atmosphere; you can almost feel the damp, cool air of the mountain valley. The bridge itself is so sacred that for centuries, only the shogun and imperial messengers were allowed to cross it!
