江行初雪図(全巻)絹本25.9x376.5 by Zhao Gan

Zhao Gan's 'Early Snow on the River' is a stunning handscroll from the Five Dynasties period that captures the biting chill of a winter day along the Yangtze River. You can almost feel the freezing wind as fishermen struggle against the icy water, their bodies hunched and breath visible in the cold air, while travelers on donkeys cross a wooden bridge. The Southern Tang Emperor Li Yu himself wrote the title inscription at the beginning of the scroll, adding a royal touch to this masterpiece of early Chinese landscape painting. Today, this incredibly long silk scroll is treasured in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
