Rolo dos Seis Corcéis do Mausoléu Zhao, Seda, 27.4x444.2, Museu do Palácio de Pequim by Zhao Lin

Jin Dynasty artist Zhao Lin brought to life the legendary warhorses of Emperor Taizong of Tang in this magnificent handscroll. The six steeds, crucial to the Emperor's military victories, are shown galloping and standing with detailed red saddles, interspersed with calligraphic inscriptions. While the original stone reliefs of these horses were carved for the Emperor's tomb, this painting preserves their vibrant appearance. It's a historical treasure, especially since two of the original stone reliefs were famously smuggled out of China and now reside in the University of Pennsylvania Museum.
