Figure Riding a Horse - Painting Core
Zhao Mengfu, a Song dynasty prince who ended up serving the Mongol Yuan rulers, painted this dignified figure in a bright red robe atop a sturdy horse. He wanted to bring back the simplicity of ancient Tang dynasty art, which is why the rider looks so calm and the horse so solid, rather than galloping wildly. If you look closely, you'll see the background is absolutely covered in red stamps and calligraphy—Emperor Qianlong was such a huge fan that he couldn't resist leaving his mark all over it!
