揭鉢圖卷 紙本27.7x111
Imagine a scene so chaotic it looks like a demon convention gone wrong—that's exactly what Yuan dynasty painter Zhu Yu captured here. This scroll illustrates the Buddhist legend of the 'Ghost Mother' (Hariti), a child-eating demoness whom the Buddha taught a lesson by hiding her youngest son under his alms bowl. The center of the image is a frenzy of grotesque spirits and muscular figures straining to lift the heavy bowl, surrounded by jagged rocks and swirling energy. It's a masterclass in using ink to create movement and tension, turning a spiritual parable into an epic battle scene.
