Abraham Bloemaert
Pintor manierista-barroco, maestro de Utrecht
Abraham Bloemaert fue un pintor y grabador neerlandés especializado en aguafuerte y grabado en cobre. Inicialmente trabajó al estilo de los «manieristas de Haarlem», pero en el siglo XVI modificó su estilo para adaptarse al nuevo estilo barroco que se estaba desarrollando en esa época. Pintaba principalmente temas históricos y algunos paisajes. Fue un maestro importante que formó, al menos durante un período, a la mayoría de los caravaggistas de Utrecht. Bloemaert nació en Gorinchem, en los Países Bajos de los Habsburgo, hijo del arquitecto Cornelis Bloemaert I, quien trasladó a su familia a Utrecht en 1575, donde Abraham fue primero alumno de Gerrit Splinter (alumno de Frans Floris) y de Joos de Beer. A partir de los 15 o 16 años, pasó luego tres años en París entre 1581 y 1583, estudiando seis semanas bajo Jehan Bassot (posiblemente Jean Cousin el Joven) y luego bajo Maistre Herry. Mientras estuvo en la Escuela de Fontainebleau, recibió formación adicional de su paisano Hieronymus Francken. Regresó a Utrecht en 1583, justo antes del inicio de las Guerras de Religión en Francia, que destruyeron gran parte de las obras del Castillo de Fontainebleau. Cuando su padre fue nombrado arquitecto de la ciudad (Stads-bouwmeester) de Ámsterdam en 1591, lo acompañó allí y, tras la muerte de su padre en 1593, regresó finalmente a Utrecht, donde estableció un taller y en 1594 se convirtió en decano («deken») del gremio de los armeros («zadelaarsgilde»), ya que desde 1367 los pintores estaban incluidos en este gremio, sin tener un propio Gremio de San Lucas. En 1611, junto con los otros dos pintores principales de Utrecht, Joachim Wtewael y Paulus Moreelse, fue uno de los fundadores del Gremio de San Lucas de Utrecht (St Lucas-gilde), un nuevo gremio de pintores de Utrecht, y se convirtió en su decano en 1618. Muchas de las pinturas de Bloemaert fueron encargadas por las iglesias católicas clandestinas de Utrecht. Falleció en Utrecht. Entre sus numerosos alumnos se encontraban sus cuatro hijos, Hendrick, Frederick, Cornelis y Adriaan (todos los cuales lograron una considerable reputación como pintores o grabadores).
