Abraham Bloemaert
Pittore manierista-barocco, maestro di Utrecht
Abraham Bloemaert fu un pittore e incisore olandese specializzato in acquaforte e incisione su rame. Inizialmente lavorò nello stile dei «manieristi di Haarlem», ma nel XVI secolo modificò il suo stile per adeguarsi al nuovo stile barocco che si stava sviluppando in quel periodo. Dipinse principalmente soggetti storici e alcuni paesaggi. Fu un insegnante importante che formò, almeno per un certo periodo, la maggior parte dei caravaggeschi di Utrecht. Bloemaert nacque a Gorinchem, nei Paesi Bassi degli Asburgo, figlio dell'architetto Cornelis Bloemaert I, che trasferì la sua famiglia ad Utrecht nel 1575, dove Abraham fu dapprima allievo di Gerrit Splinter (allievo di Frans Floris) e di Joos de Beer. Dall'età di 15 o 16 anni, trascorse poi tre anni a Parigi dal 1581 al 1583, studiando per sei settimane sotto Jehan Bassot (forse Jean Cousin il Giovane) e poi sotto Maistre Herry. Durante il periodo alla Scuola di Fontainebleau, ricevette ulteriore formazione dal suo connazionale Hieronymus Francken. Tornò ad Utrecht nel 1583, proprio prima dell'inizio delle Guerre di Religione francesi, che distrussero gran parte delle opere del Castello di Fontainebleau. Quando suo padre fu nominato architetto della città (Stads-bouwmeester) di Amsterdam nel 1591, lo accompagnò lì e, alla morte del padre nel 1593, tornò definitivamente ad Utrecht, dove aprì un laboratorio e nel 1594 divenne decano («deken») della corporazione dei sellaioi («zadelaarsgilde»), poiché dal 1367 i pittori erano inclusi in tale corporazione, senza una propria Corporazione di San Luca. Nel 1611, insieme agli altri due principali pittori di Utrecht, Joachim Wtewael e Paulus Moreelse, fu uno dei fondatori della Corporazione di San Luca di Utrecht (St Lucas-gilde), una nuova corporazione di pittori di Utrecht, e ne divenne decano nel 1618. Molte delle opere di Bloemaert furono commissionate dalle chiese cattoliche clandestine di Utrecht. Morì ad Utrecht. Tra i suoi numerosi allievi vi erano i suoi quattro figli, Hendrick, Frederick, Cornelis e Adriaan (tutti i quali ottennero una considerevole reputazione come pittori o incisori).
