憂鬱浪漫挪威風景
赫爾曼·奧古斯特·卡佩倫是一位挪威畫家。卡佩倫以其憂鬱、戲劇性和浪漫主義的風景構圖而聞名。 赫爾曼·奧古斯特·卡佩倫出生於挪威的希恩。他是迪德里克·馮·卡佩倫（1795–1866）和瑪格麗特·諾布爾·塞韋里娜·亨麗埃特·勒文斯基爾德（1796–1866）的兒子。勒文斯基爾德家族和卡佩倫家族都是挪威顯赫的商人、地主、公務員和政治家家族。他的家族擁有著名的鐵廠及其他各類產業。他的祖父迪德里克·馮·卡佩倫（1761–1828）是1814年埃茲沃爾挪威制憲議會的成員。 他在泰勒馬克郡格倫蘭地區烏勒福斯的霍爾登莊園長大。1845年在希恩完成學業後，他前往克里斯蒂安尼亞，在皇家弗雷德里克大學參加另一場考試。隨後他前往杜塞爾多夫，師從漢斯·古德學習。1846年至1850年間，卡佩倫在杜塞爾多夫藝術學院約翰·威廉·席默爾的風景畫班學習。他與杜塞爾多夫畫派有關聯。 卡佩倫在挪威進行了多次學習旅行：古德布蘭斯達爾和洛姆（與古德和約翰·弗雷德里克·埃克斯伯格一起，1846年），松恩和哈當厄爾（1847年），以及在霍爾登周邊鄉村的幾次夏季居住。 他的畫作以廣博與原創性為特色，並融合了濃厚的詩意情感。他源自泰勒馬克郡、描繪森林、湖泊與溪流的奔放設計，充滿了孤獨與無常的感傷情調。自然界強有力的形態，尤其是樹木與山巒，在構圖、色彩運用以及深苔綠色調的表現上極具成效。 他最多產的時期是1850年至1852年，即他生命的最後兩年。他與胃癌抗爭，最終於1852年在杜塞道夫去世，年僅25歲。
