Canaletto
Maestro de vistas venecianas
Giovanni Antonio Canal, conocido comúnmente como Canaletto, fue un pintor italiano de la República de Venecia, considerado un miembro importante de la escuela veneciana del siglo XVIII. Pintor de vistas urbanas o vedute de Venecia, Roma y Londres, también pintó vistas imaginarias (conocidas como capricci), aunque la demarcación en sus obras entre lo real y lo imaginario nunca es del todo clara. Fue además un importante grabador que utilizó la técnica del aguafuerte. Entre 1746 y 1756 trabajó en Inglaterra, donde pintó numerosas vistas de Londres y otros lugares, incluido el castillo de Warwick y el castillo de Alnwick. Tuvo un gran éxito en Inglaterra, gracias al comerciante y conocedor británico Joseph «Consul» Smith, cuya amplia colección de obras de Canaletto fue vendida al rey Jorge III en 1762.
