The Prison. V
1740-45
Canaletto captures a bustling scene outside the Doge's Palace in Venice, focusing on the infamous Bridge of Sighs leading to the new prisons, or 'Le Preson.' While tourists today romanticize the bridge, it was actually a grim passageway for prisoners catching their last glimpse of freedom before incarceration. Unlike his famous sunny oil paintings, this etching showcases the artist's incredible skill with line and texture, bringing the stone architecture and chattering figures to life. The casual crowd in the foreground seems completely oblivious to the dramatic fate of those heading into the jail!
