Canaletto
Maître des vues vénitiennes
Giovanni Antonio Canal, communément connu sous le nom de Canaletto, était un peintre italien de la République de Venise, considéré comme un membre important de l’école vénitienne du XVIIIe siècle. Peintre de vues urbaines ou vedute de Venise, Rome et Londres, il peignit également des vues imaginaires (appelées capricci), bien que la démarcation dans ses œuvres entre le réel et l’imaginaire ne soit jamais tout à fait nette. Il fut également un important graveur utilisant la technique de l’eau-forte. De 1746 à 1756, il travailla en Angleterre où il peignit de nombreuses vues de Londres et d’autres sites, notamment le château de Warwick et le château d’Alnwick. Il connut un grand succès en Angleterre, grâce au marchand et connaisseur britannique Joseph « Consul » Smith, dont la vaste collection d’œuvres de Canaletto fut vendue au roi George III en 1762.
