カナレット
ヴェネツィア風景の巨匠
ジョヴァンニ・アントニオ・カナル、通称カナレットは、ヴェネツィア共和国出身のイタリア人画家であり、18世紀のヴェネツィア派の重要な成員と見なされている。 彼はヴェネツィア、ローマ、ロンドンの都市景観（ヴェドゥータ）の画家であると同時に、想像上の景観（カプリッチョと呼ばれる）も描いたが、その作品における現実と想像の境界は決して明確ではない。さらに、エッチング技法を用いた重要な版画家でもあった。1746年から1756年の期間、彼はイギリスで活動し、ロンドンやウォリック城、アルニック城など多くの景観を描いた。イギリスの商人兼美術鑑定家ジョゼフ・「コンスル」・スミスの助力により、彼はイギリスで非常に成功を収め、スミスが所有していたカナレットの作品の大コレクションは1762年にジョージ3世に売却された。
