Canaletto
Meester van Venetiaanse gezichten
Giovanni Antonio Canal, algemeen bekend als Canaletto, was een Italiaanse schilder uit de Republiek Venetië, beschouwd als een belangrijk lid van de Venetiaanse school uit de 18e eeuw. Als schilder van stadsgezichten of vedute van Venetië, Rome en Londen, schilderde hij ook denkbeeldige gezichten (aangeduid als capricci), hoewel de scheidslijn in zijn werk tussen het reële en het denkbeeldige nooit helemaal scherp is. Hij was bovendien een belangrijk graficus die de etstechniek gebruikte. In de periode van 1746 tot 1756 werkte hij in Engeland, waar hij veel gezichten van Londen en andere locaties schilderde, waaronder Warwick Castle en Alnwick Castle. Hij was zeer succesvol in Engeland, dankzij de Britse handelaar en kenner Joseph "Consul" Smith, wiens grote collectie werken van Canaletto in 1762 werd verkocht aan koning George III.
