Canaletto
Mestre das vistas venezianas
Giovanni Antonio Canal, comumente conhecido como Canaletto, foi um pintor italiano da República de Veneza, considerado um membro importante da escola veneziana do século XVIII. Pintor de vistas urbanas ou vedute de Veneza, Roma e Londres, também pintou vistas imaginárias (conhecidas como capricci), embora a demarcação em suas obras entre o real e o imaginário nunca seja totalmente clara. Foi também um importante gravador que utilizava a técnica da água-forte. No período de 1746 a 1756, trabalhou na Inglaterra, onde pintou muitas vistas de Londres e outros locais, incluindo o Castelo de Warwick e o Castelo de Alnwick. Teve grande sucesso na Inglaterra, graças ao comerciante e conhecedor britânico Joseph "Consul" Smith, cuja grande coleção de obras de Canaletto foi vendida ao rei Jorge III em 1762.
