Paesaggi simbolici evocano metafisica
Caspar David Friedrich fu un pittore romantico tedesco del XIX secolo, generalmente considerato il più importante artista tedesco della sua generazione. È meglio conosciuto per i suoi paesaggi allegorici del periodo centrale, che tipicamente presentano figure contemplative in silhouette contro cieli notturni, nebbie mattutine, alberi spogli o rovine gotiche o megalitiche. Il suo interesse principale come artista era la contemplazione della natura, e la sua opera spesso simbolica e anticlassica cerca di trasmettere una risposta soggettiva ed emotiva al mondo naturale. I dipinti di Friedrich caratteristicamente collocano la presenza umana in una prospettiva ridotta tra paesaggi vasti, riducendo le figure a una scala che, secondo lo storico dell'arte Christopher John Murray, dirige «lo sguardo dello spettatore verso la loro dimensione metafisica».
