Caspar David Friedrich
Symbolische landschappen roepen metafysica op
Caspar David Friedrich was een Duitse romantische landschapschilder uit de 19e eeuw, algemeen beschouwd als de belangrijkste Duitse kunstenaar van zijn generatie. Hij is het bekendst om zijn allegorische landschappen uit de middenperiode, die doorgaans contemplatieve figuren in silhouet tonen tegen nachtelijke hemel, ochtendmist, kale bomen of gotische of megalithische ruïnes. Zijn primaire interesse als kunstenaar was de contemplatie van de natuur, en zijn vaak symbolische en antiklassieke werk streeft ernaar een subjectieve, emotionele reactie op de natuurlijke wereld over te brengen. Friedrichs schilderijen plaatsen kenmerkend menselijke aanwezigheid in verminderd perspectief tussen uitgestrekte landschappen, waardoor de figuren tot een schaal worden teruggebracht die, volgens kunsthistoricus Christopher John Murray, de «blik van de toeschouwer richt op hun metafysische dimensie».
