Caspar David Friedrich
Paisagens simbólicas evocam metafísica
Caspar David Friedrich foi um pintor romântico alemão do século XIX, geralmente considerado o mais importante artista alemão de sua geração. Ele é melhor conhecido por suas paisagens alegóricas do período intermediário, que tipicamente apresentam figuras contemplativas em silhueta contra céus noturnos, névoas matinais, árvores nuas ou ruínas góticas ou megalíticas. Seu principal interesse como artista era a contemplação da natureza, e sua obra frequentemente simbólica e anticlássica busca transmitir uma resposta subjetiva e emocional ao mundo natural. As pinturas de Friedrich caracteristicamente colocam a presença humana em uma perspectiva diminuída no meio de paisagens expansivas, reduzindo as figuras a uma escala que, segundo o historiador de arte Christopher John Murray, direciona «o olhar do espectador para sua dimensão metafísica».
