Chōbunsai Eishi

Chōbunsai Eishi war ein japanischer Ukiyo-e-Künstler. Sein Familienname war Hosoda (細田). Sein Vorname war Tokitomi (時富). Sein gebräuchlicher Name war Taminosuke (民之丞), später Yasaburo (弥三郎). Er war Schüler von Kano Eisen'in Michinobu (狩野 栄川院 典信). Als ältester Sohn eines direkten Vasallen des Shogunats aus einer wohlhabenden Samurai-Familie des Fujiwara-Klans geboren. Eishi war ein Vasall des Shogunats mit einem großzügigen Gehalt von 500 „Koku“ (90.000 Liter) Reis. Eishi verließ den Dienst des Shōgun Ieharu, um sich der Kunst zu widmen. Seine frühen Werke waren Drucke, meist Bijin-ga-Porträts von großen, schlanken und anmutigen Schönheiten im von ihm selbst begründeten Originalstil, ähnlich dem von Kiyonaga und Utamaro. Er gründete seine eigene Schule und war ein Rivale von Utamaro. Als produktiver Maler gab er ab 1801 das Entwerfen von Drucken auf, um sich ganz der Malerei zu widmen.
