A Banquet Scene by Chōbunsai Eishi, c. 1795

Before becoming a master of ukiyo-e, Chōbunsai Eishi was actually a high-ranking samurai who gave up his prestigious status to pursue art! In this elegant banquet scene, a man in a formal black kimono sits on a tatami mat, attended by two beautifully dressed women in elaborate, patterned robes, with a festive fish dish ready on the table. Eishi was famous for his 'bijin-ga' (pictures of beautiful women), and his noble background often gave his figures a refined, aristocratic grace that set them apart from other artists of the Edo period.
