Chōbunsai Eishi

Chōbunsai Eishi fue un artista japonés de ukiyo-e. Su apellido era Hosoda (細田). Su nombre era Tokitomi (時富). Su nombre común era Taminosuke (民之丞) y más tarde Yasaburo (弥三郎). Discípulo de Kano Eisen'in Michinobu (狩野 栄川院 典信). Nació como hijo mayor de un vasallo directo del Shogunato, de una familia samurái acomodada perteneciente al clan Fujiwara. Eishi fue un vasallo del Shogunato con una generosa asignación de 500 'koku' (90.000 litros) de arroz. Eishi dejó el servicio del shogún Ieharu para dedicarse al arte. Sus primeras obras fueron grabados, principalmente retratos de bijin-ga de mujeres altas, delgadas y graciosas en el estilo original establecido por él mismo, similar al de Kiyonaga y Utamaro. Fundó su propia escuela y fue rival de Utamaro. Fue un pintor prolífico y, a partir de 1801, abandonó el diseño de grabados para dedicarse exclusivamente a la pintura.
