Chōbunsai Eishi

Chōbunsai Eishi fu un artista giapponese di ukiyo-e. Il suo cognome era Hosoda (細田). Il suo nome era Tokitomi (時富). Il suo nome comune era Taminosuke (民之丞) e in seguito Yasaburo (弥三郎). Allievo di Kano Eisen'in Michinobu (狩野 栄川院 典信). Nato come primo figlio di un vassallo diretto dello Shogunato, appartenente a una famiglia samurai benestante del clan Fujiwara. Eishi era un vassallo dello Shogunato con un generoso stipendio di 500 'koku' (90.000 litri) di riso. Eishi lasciò il servizio dello shogun Ieharu per dedicarsi all'arte. Le sue prime opere erano stampe, soprattutto ritratti di bijin-ga che raffiguravano donne alte, snelle e graziose nello stile originale da lui stesso stabilito, simile a quello di Kiyonaga e Utamaro. Fondò la propria scuola e fu rivale di Utamaro. Fu un pittore prolifico e, dal 1801, abbandonò la progettazione di stampe per dedicarsi interamente alla pittura.
