François-Joseph Navez
Belgischer neoklassizistischer Porträtmaler
François-Joseph Navez war ein belgischer neoklassischer Maler. Navez wurde in Charleroi geboren. Er war ein Schüler von Jacques-Louis David. Er verbrachte fünf Jahre in Italien zwischen 1817 und 1822. Zwischen 1835 und 1862 war er Direktor der Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel. Er war ein sehr erfolgreicher Porträtmaler. Er malte auch viele mythologische und historische Themen. Der orientalistische Maler Jean-François Portaels war sein Schüler (und Schwiegersohn). Jean Carolus, der belgische Maler von Genreszenen und Interieurs, war ein Schützling von François-Joseph Navez. Navez wurde 1826 zum viertklassigen Mitglied des Königlichen Instituts der Niederlande gewählt, wurde 1841 außerordentliches Mitglied und trat 1851 zurück. Er starb 1869 in Brüssel.
